Swim Alberta athlete funding programmes for the 2009-2010 season.

Swim Alberta Travel Grant

In order to assist the swimmers of Alberta to participate at the major national level competitions Swim Alberta will provide travel assistance to the 2010 Spring Nationals and the 2010 Pan Pacific Trials for the 2009-2010 swim season.

• $25,000 divided amongst the attending swimmers
• $10,000 Spring Nationals / Pan Pacific Trials
• $2,500 Spring Nationals / Pan Pacific Trials to be shared by top 16 finishers
• $10,000 Summer Nationals / Pan Pacific Trials
• $2,500 Summer Nationals / Pan Pacific Trials to be shared by top 16 finisher


High Performance Development Fund

The creation of the High Performance Development has been done to help encourage and provide support to swimmers that are within the FINA A + 2% standard.

Program:
Swimmers who meet the FINA ‘A’ time plus 2 % (LC) will be eligible to access funds for enhanced preparations from Sept 1, 2009 – August 31, 2010. Each swimmer who attains the standard in an Olympic eligible event will have access to and equal share of $10,000.00. Times for eligibility to this program will be based on performances from April 1, 2009 – August 31, 2009. The outline of the money’s use must be submitted to the General Manager of Swim Alberta by the coach and athlete for the funds to be released.

Swim Alberta Post Secondary Bursary       

Swim Alberta recognises that university swimming is an important step in providing a complete continuum for swimmers in the province. A strong and healthy varsity program provides opportunities for university age swimmer to continue to develop and become players on the national and international scene, while still getting an education. Canadian Universities can provide scholarships to swimmers in the Canadian Inter-University Sport structure. Additionally, external bursaries can be accepted by swimmers in CIS programs., to support this and to support the university institutions in Alberta Swim Alberta sponsors 30 post secondary bursaries per year.

Post Secondary Bursaries will be available to both University and College athletes in the Province of Alberta that participate in the national championships or are partnered with a high performance program. The post secondary institution must have monies to match the $1000.00 put forward by Swim Alberta. These monies can come from either a corporate partner or a 3rd party funding agency. Third party funding partners may include the provincial Jimmy Condon Scholarships or other third party scholarships.

• $2000.00 per year for 5 years (SA $1000.00 & $1000.00 matched by post secondary partner);
• to be eligible for nomination swimmers must be minimally a national qualifier and entering their first year of post secondary education;
• to retain the bursary swimmers must be academically eligible to represent the institution, qualify for SNC national championships & compete at summer national championships;
• 6 bursaries per year are available (currently they are divided as 3 for the top placing school, 2 for the second placing and 1 for the third placing school at CIS);
• Should a student athlete choose to attend a College, applications can be made to the General Manager of Swim Alberta for consideration.



Swim Alberta Post Secondary Institution Grant  

Swim Alberta believes that universities play a large role in the development of high performance and senior swimmers in the province.  With this in mind Swim Alberta offers a funding programme to support the universities in the province that provide varsity swimming. To support the programs Swim Alberta will provide $10,000.00 in funding.

• Funds for this program are divided amongst the universities that participate at the CIS Championships;
• Points are allocated for both performance and number of swimmers that attend per institution;
• 50% of fund distribution is based on swimmers in attendance;
• 25% of funds are based on the rank of the varsity program;
• 25% of funds are based on the individual performances of swimmers. 


Enhanced Visitations Program                                                    

Swimmers and coaches will be targeted for development and provided visitations to Centre, Academies or selected clubs.

• $10,000.00 has been set aside for access for targeted swimmers and coaches to do visitations to programs that will enhance their skill sets;
• Coaches who have high performance junior athletes can apply to the General Manager of Swim Alberta for consideration in the program;
• The General Manager and Provincial Coaches will review applications or implement programs to accelerate the development of athletes.


Open Water Elite Program – Swim Alberta                                               

The Swim Alberta as part of their mandate recognises the importance of financial support to swimmers and as a result of created a funding program that is to provide financial assistance to the swimmers of Alberta. The funds are intended to allow for enhanced programming to aid the swimmers in achieving their goals in the sport.  To support these goals Swim Alberta will provide $3000.00 in funding to support open water swimming.

 Each swimmer who attains the standard will have access to and equal share of $3000.00. Times for eligibility to this program will be based on the April 1, 2009 – August 31, 2009. The outline of the money’s use must be submitted and accepted by the General Manager, by the coach and athlete for the funds to be released.

• Swimmers meeting the standards will share the $3,000.00 of funding support;
• Swimmers who meet the FINA ‘A’ time plus 2 % (LC) in the women’s 800 or the men’s 1500 will be eligible to access funds;
• Women’s 800 Free  8:46.30
• Men’s 1500 Free 15:32.44
• The open water program for activities from Sept 1, 2009 – August 31, 2010
• Swimmers must be registered with and representing a Swim Alberta registered year round program;
• Swimmers must be a landed immigrant or Canadian citizen;
• Swimmers must be registered by October 15, 2009;
• The outline of the money’s use must be submitted and accepted by the General Manager, by the coach and athlete for the funds to be released. 


SNC National Team Funding       

Swim Alberta recognizes the importance and the opportunities that are created for athletes when they make a national team at any level. As there are some national team programs that have a participation fee attached Swim Alberta has allocated $6,000.00 that will be used to help offset the participation fee.


ACC Coach Mentorship Program

Swim Alberta has allocated $15,000.00 for coach mentorship opportunities. The Alberta Coaches Council is completing the outline for this program which once approved will be circulated to the membership. 


ACC Coach Education Program

Swim Alberta has allocated $6,000.00 for coach education funding. Coaches can apply to the Alberta Coaches Council with an outline of their intended educational program and the estimated costs for the program. Cost may include travel, accommodations and registration fees. The ACC will review all applications and will allocate funds.


Olympic Medal Program         

In order to recognize the achievement and the commitments of the swimmers and coaches who medal at the Olympic Games Swim Alberta will be providing financial awards.

Program:

Swimmers winning a medal at the 2012 Olympic Games will received $5000.00 per medal earned whether the performance be on a relay or an individual event. The coach of record of the medal earning, swimmer will earn $2500.00 per medal.
