Brent Hayden of Vancouver and Erica Morningstar of Calgary both returned to the podium on Sunday each earning a silver medal to conclude second stop on the FINA World Cup short course swimming circuit.
STOCKHOLM (October 16, 2011) – In the men’s 50 freestyle, Stefan Nystrand of Sweden took the gold in 21.70 seconds edging Hayden second in 21.76 while Petter Stymne of Sweden was third in 21.82. It was Hayden’s second medal of the competition. On Saturday, he was also second to Nystrand in the 100 freestyle.
“This is a good way to get the confidence rolling,” said Hayden, a five-time world championship medallist. “My body is reacting well, my starts are more solid which really reflects the good sprint training I’ve had. And it’s also great to execute a lot of turns which was my weak point at the world championships this summer.”
In the women’s 100-metre individual medley, Theresa Michalak of Germany took the gold in 59.30, Morningstar was second in a personal best 59.39 and Kanako Watanabe of Japan third in 1:01.30. It was also a second trip to the podium for Morningstar, the 200 IM winner on Saturday.
“I would have loved the win again,” said Morningstar, a 2008 Olympian. “The 100 IM is quite a different race from the 200 IM and is really based on your sprinting ability. I also feel like my freestyle is coming around after not being there the last couple of years.’’
Morningstar was only 0.11 seconds off the Canadian short course record held by Julia Wilkinson of Stratford, Ont. Morningstar was also fourth in the 100 freestyle earlier Sunday.
Mike Brown of Calgary placing fifth, Paul Kornfeld of Calgary seventh and Andrew Poznikoff of Burnaby, B.C., eighth.
