Jennifer Beckberger of Ajax, Ont., Lyam Dias of Pointe-Claire, Que., and Erin Miller of Edmonton all posted fifth place finishes on Wednesday in swimming action at the 2011 Pan American Games.
GUADALAJARA (October 19, 2011) – Beckberger was only a 0.25 seconds from the podium in the women’s 100 freestyle clocking a personal best 55.68. Amanda Kendall led the U.S., to a 1-2 finish in 54.75 and Erika Erndl was second in 55.04. Arlene Semeco of Venezuela was third in 55.43.
‘’I changed my breathing pattern for the final,’’ said Beckberger. ‘’It helped a lot, I went a lot faster. Still it’s tough not winning a medal.’’
In the men’s 200 individual medley, Dias had a great start with the fastest reaction time off the blocks and was third after 50-metres. However he fell behind in the middle of the race before surging on the last length to finish in a personal best 2:05.06.
‘’I’ve gone pretty far with this event in such a short time,’’ said Dias. ‘’I’m really happy with my performance. Last year my best time was 2:09, so dropping four seconds like that is a big step. I was pretty nervous before the race, so this was a good experience.’’
There were two Canadian finalists in the women’s 200 butterfly with Miller clocking fifth in 2:16.10 and Brenna MacLean of West Vancouver sixth in 2:16.13. Kimberly Vandenberg of the U.S., was the winner in 2:10.54.
In the men’s 4X200 freestyle, Canada was sixth with Frank Despond of Toronto, Rory Biskupski of Vancouver, Dias and Ashton Baumann of Ottawa.
Competition continues Thursday.
