Rebecca Smith Named 2016 Alberta Junior Female Athlete of the Year by Alberta Sport Connection
April 28, 2017... Banff, AB.- Former Red Deer Catalina Swim Club swimmer Rebecca Smith was selected by the Alberta Sport Connection as the 2016 Junior Female Athlete of the Year for her outstanding performances throughout the past year. Smith was recognized for her award at the 2017 Alberta Sport Recognition Awards Banquet this evening in Banff, Alberta.
Smith is a multiple provincial record holder. Rebecca began swimming in 2006 with the Red Deer Catalina Swim Club. She swam with Red Deer until July of 2016 when she briefly joined the Cascade Swim Club in Calgary before heading east in the Fall of 2016 to train at the High-Performance Training Centre in Toronto.
In 2016, Rebecca represented Canada at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships and was also a member of the Swimming Canada Mare Nostrum Tour and Youth Development Camp. Smith won five silver medals at the 2016 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in the 100-m Freestyle, 200-m Freestyle, 100-m butterfly as well as the 4 x 100-m Freestyle Relay and 4 x 100-m medley relay.
At the Canadian Age Group Championships held in Calgary in July of 2016, Smith earned five gold medals in the 50-m freestyle, 100-m freestyle, 200-m freestyle, 50-m butterfly, 100-m butterfly individual events. Continuing the winning streak in August at the Canadian Summer Nationals in Edmonton, Smith claimed a silver medal in the 100-m freestyle and 100-m butterfly events and a gold medal in the 50-m butterfly.
Smith has received both the 2015 and 2016 Junior Swimmer of the Year – Female Award from Swim Alberta.
