Edmonton Keyano's Lili Margitai breaks 19-year old provincal record in the 200 freestyle.
The final day of the 2010 Speedo Alberta Age Group Swimming Championships began with the annual short course Youth Regognition awards which are presented to athletes who qualify by acheving high ranking time standards in their respective events. T-shirts were presented by the program sponsor, Team Aquatic Supplies, to 97 athletes who accomplished this standard. Day three was the final day for athletes to earn their selection to either the 11-12 Alberta North vs South dual meet or the Best of the West 13-14 year old tri meet in Kamloops, BC.
1500 Freestyle
The first final event of the evening saw the 14 and under boys competing for both the 13-14 and 12 & under titles. The 12 and under gold medal was given to Edmonton Keyano's Kyle Folk who completed the distance in 17:45.23. The silver and bronze were won by Aiden Friesen of the Edmonton Olympians and Nathan Sawicki of the Medicine Hat Waves. The 13-14 year old award went to Cascade Swim Clubs Dustin Warrack who finished in 16:45.59 over Calgary Patriot Cameron Fowler and Cascade's Kyle Beatty.
The 14 and under girls completed the event at the end of the preliminary session. Leah Wookey of the University of Calgary club was the quickest finisher in the 12 and under girls age grouping with a final time of 18.42.44. Following Leah were Taryn Pratt of Cascade and Rachel Maradyn from Keyano. The 13-14 year old age group was led by Jessica Warrack of Cascade who finished in 17:49.60 while Arynn deLeeuw of Edmonton and Kelsey Myers from Calgary earned the silver and bronze.
100 Butterfly
Haley Strange from the University of Calgary earned the top podium position winning the 10 and under girls age group in a 1:16.91. Karah Folk from Edmonton's Keyano club took silver while Red Deer's Kristen Trepanier finished up with the bronze award. Mackenzie Flowers from the Olympian club won the boys side of the 10 and under age group with a 1:23.46. LA swim club's Joshua Freund and Finlay Knox from Okotoks earned the silver and bronze positions.
Lili Margitai of the Edmonton Keyano Swim Club won the 11-12 girls event in a very close race with Cascade's Shayla Pogany. Shayla led by just less than a tenth after the first 50 however Lili moved on the second 50 to win the event in 1:07.50 over Shayla's 1:07.83. Finishing third was Olympians Georgia Kidd. Chelsea Shaul of the University of Calgary club was the top swimmer in the 13-14 year old age group finishing in 1:04.10. Edwina Chih of the Patriots and Emily Flowers of the Olympian Club finished up in second and third respectivly.
Aiden Friesen won the 11-12 boys group just ahead of fast closing teammate Noah Lubberding finishing in 1:12.13 and 1:12.31 respectivly. Ryder McGinnis from the Keyano club finished with the third place. The Foothills Stingrays were represented atop the podium by Ryan Jackson in the 13-14 year old age group. Ryan finished in 1:05.55 over Cascade's Ken Stairs and University of Calgary's Tat Terrence.
200 Freestyle
The 10 and under girls came down to a photo finish with Catalina's Rebecca Smith winning by just one hundreth over University of Calgary's Haley Strange. Rebecca finished with a 2:28.72 while the final podium position was earned by Edmonton Keyano's Karah Folk. Alberta Marlin Caleb Lee won the boys side of the 10 and under event with a 2:30.78 followed by Joshua Freund of Lethbridge and Ishan Montenegro from Calgary.
The 11-12 year old age group resulted in the top two finishers both breaking a 19-year old provincial record formally held by Megan Gillis. Cascade's Shayla Pogany took the early lead in the event however Lili Margitai moved on the second 100 to take the gold medal and set the new time to beat in the event. Lili finished up with a 2:10.10 and took off over half a second. Shayla's final time was 2:10.48 and Keyano's Sophia Saroukian took the bronze in the event. The 13-14 year old age group saw Alberta Marlin Bailey Sloan winning with a 2:05.44 followed by Leah Troskot of Lethbridge and Paige Kremer from Edmonton.
Kyle Folk from Keyano won the 11-12 year old age group with a 2:11.14. Cochrane Comet Conner Matthezing placed second while Noah Lubberding from the Olympian club finished third. Cascade's Anthony Lyons won the 13-14 age group with his 1:57.72 effort ahead of teammate Ken Stairs and Bow River's Jonathan Brown.
50 Backstroke
Sarah Darcel from the Grande Cache Otters finished first in 38.40 while a pair of Alberta Marlin swimmers, Mikaela Wong and Meaghan Morter took the final medal positions. Caleb Lee from the Alberta Marlin club won the 50 backstroke in a very close race against Kenton Williams of the University of Calgary finishing in 37.14 and 37.21. Zachary Baranowski from the Edmonton Keyano club finished in third.
Shayla Pogany from the Cascade club won the 11-12 girls with her 33.27 performance ahead of Glenco's Nikki Abbott and Cascade's Lauren Hedley. Paige Kremer and Emily Flowers dualed for the top of the 13-14 year old age group with Paige finishing just ahead of Emily with a 30.45 versus 30.60. Third place was awarded to An Trinh.
Jarod Tsang from the University of Calgary finished ahead of a pair of Edmonton swimmers to win the 11-12 boys grouping. Jarod's 31.11 placed him over Kyle Folk of Keyano and Olympians Aiden Friesen. Jonathan Brown from the Bow River association finished with a 28.68 to win the 13-14 gold ahead of Calgary's Bradley Crocker and Okotoks Ryan Jackson.
200 Breaststroke
The Edmonton Keyano swim club saw Karah Folk and Tess Hafer win the top two podium positions in the 10 & under age group over Grande Cache Otters Sarah Darcel. Karah finished with a 3:11.48. The Stingrays Justin Lisoway won the photo finish ahead of Keyano's Michael Antifaoff with the top two times being 3:28.39 and 3:28.45. The bronze medal was awarded to Medicine Hat Waves swimmer Ty Jans.
Karah Vanderbeek from the University of Calgary club earned the gold in the 11-12 age group with her 2:53.47 performance with silver going to Emily Wagner from Cascade and bronze to Keyano's Sophia Saroukian. Chelsea Chan from Keyano won the 13-14 age group in a 2:38.14 over Grande Prairie's Michelle Bylow and Keyano's Alisia Saroukian.
Edmonton Keyano's Ryder McGinnis finished the first of the 11-12 boys with a 2:45.15 over a pair of University of Calgary swimmers, Mark Lai and Oliver Bidrman, who took second and third. Ken Stairs from Cascade took gold in the 13-14 group with a 2:29.93 over teammate Clive Mackenzie who took silver and Rhys Johnson from Bow River earned bronze.
100 Individual Medley
University of Calgary's Haley Strange won the 10 & under girls event with a 1:19.83 over the Red Deer pair of Rebecca Smith and Kristen Trepanier who took silver and bronze. Joshua Freund added another gold to his collection finishing with a 1:21.91 over Finlay Knox and Michael McMahon who both swim for the Stingrays in Okotoks.
Edmonton Keyano's Lili Margitai won her third gold of the evening finishing in 1:09.17 over Olympian Georgia Kidd and Alyssa Gabris from the University of Calgary. Bailey Sloan who swims with the Marlin club in Medicine Hat won the 13-14 event over Keyano's Chelsea Chan and Hannah Lantz with a final time of 1:08.17.
Jarod Tsang of the University of Calgary won a second individual gold finishing the 11-12 boys event with a 1:08.60 while Kyle Folk of Keyano and Conner Matthezing of the Cochrane Comets won the other medals. The final individual event of the evening went to Jonathan Brown from the Bow River association who completed the event in 1:03.65 over Cascade's Clive McKenzie and Foothills Ryan Jackson.
200 Medley Relay
The first relay of the evening was the 10 and under girls where the University of Calgary saw Sophie Lalonde-Bester, Allison McCloy, Haley Strange and Kate Rendall take the gold thanks to a strong fly leg by Strange (33.96) with the final team result being 2:34.26. The University of Calgary boys team followed suit to win the gold leading from the backstroke through to the end. Kenton Williams, David Chiu, Ishan Montenegro and Paul Latkovic finished in 2:41.25.
Cascade's 11-12 girls finished first with their 2:12.60 effort after moving to the lead during the butterfly leg. Taryn Pratt, Emily Wagner, Shayla Pogany and Laurin Thorne raced to a 2:12.60 earning the gold. The University of Calgary took the boys side of the 11-12 age group with Carter Shaul, Mark Lai, Jarod Tsang and Oliver Bidrman moving to the lead during the final 50 of the race.
The 13-14 girls of the University of Calgary club eventually finished first in a very tight race against the Edmonton Olympians. An Trinh, Nikki MacLeod, Chelsea Shaul and Carina Fan won the event in a final time of 2:03.25. In the final event of the evening Cascade's Ken Stairs, Clive McKenzie, Anthony Lyons and Dustin Warrack took the hardware with their final time of 1:56.76.
