Edmonton Keyano's Kyle Folk adds second provincal record during day two action.

 

The 2010 Speedo Alberta Age Group Championships continued with the titles for the 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 50 butterfly, 100 backstroke and the 400 freestkylefolk_small.jpgyle up for grabs.  Team titles will be awarded in the 200 freestyle relay.  Athletes aged 11-12 continue to fight for spots on the North vs South dual meet teams while the 13-14 year olds are competing to see who will represent Alberta at the Best of the West tri meet held in Kamloops, BC. 

The meet got off to a quick start with Kyle Folk breaking his second provincial record in the heats of the 50 freestyle breaking the record set last year by Cascade's Anthony Lyons.  Kyle knocked a tenth off the record to qualify first for the final with a 26.56.  During finals Kyle showed consistency of performance and equaled his record setting time to the hundreth to win the 50 freestyle event for the 11-12 year old age category.

200 IM
The evening finals got underway with Haley Strange of the University of Calgary winning the 10 and under girls category ahead of a fast closing Karah Folk of the Keyano club.  Haley finished the event in 2:47.02 while Rebecca Schamber of Silver Tide took third.  Joshua Freund of Lethbridge's LA Swim Club earned top honours in the 10 and under boys finishing in 2:51.15 while Alberta Marlin Caleb Lee and Silver Tides Finlay Knox rounded out the podium positions.

The Edmonton Keyano club had the first sweep of the competition earning all three podium positions in the 11-12 year old girls category.  Lili Margitai was the first finisher completing the race in 2:30.14 over Sophia Saroukian and Rachel Maradyn.  Alberta Marlin Bailey Sloan had the finishing kick in the 13-14 girls final winning the event on the last 25 of the race over Olympians Paige Kremer.  Bailey won the event in a final of 2:23.19 while Paige earned silver in 2:23.79.  Taking bronze was University of Calgary's Nikki Macleod over a fast charging Leah Troskot from LA swim club.

Jarod Tsang of the University of Calgary was the top finisher in the 11-12 year old boys age group.  Jarod took the race out with a very fast butterfly (31.38) and finished in a final of 2:28.35.  Cochrane Comet Conner Matthezing swam to second and Edmonton Olympian Kyle Aseron took bronze.  Cascade's Ken Stairs won the gold in the 13-14 year old age group with a final result of 2:14.01.  Bow River's Jonathan Brown earned the silver and Dustin Warrack of Cascade earned bronze.

50 Freestyle
Haley Strange earned her second gold of the evening winning the 10 and under girls event in 31.65.  Red Deer's Rebecca Smith and University of Calgary's Josaphine Lalonde-Bester finshed in second and third respectivly.  Joshua Freund took top position to win his second gold of the evening winning the boys side in 32.18 ahead a pair of Cascade athletes, Nikola Hallett and Jacob Jubenvill who rounded out the top three positions.

Georgia Kidd of the Edmonton Olympian club won the 11-12 year old age grouping finishing in 28.46 ahead of Univerisity of Calgary's Alyssa Gabris and Alberta Marlin Taylor Andrew.  Leah Troskot of Lethbridge won the 13-14 year old girls age group over the current provincial record holder Bailey Sloan.  Lean won the event with a very fast 26.39 just 0.02 shy of Bailey's record.  Edwina Chih of the Calgary Patriots finished in the third and final medal position.

Kyle Folk, as mentioned above, equaled his mornings provincial record to win the final in 26.56, over Olympian Aiden Friesen and University of Calgary's Mark Lai.  Cascade's  Anthony Lyons swam to a 25.38 to earn him the top position in the 13-14 year old age group over Foothills Stingray swimmer Cole Midtdal and Marlin Matthew Crockford.

200 Backstroke
Rebecca Schamber of Sherwood Parks Silver Tide club won the 10 and under category finishing in 2:46.60 in a very outtouching Medicine Hat's Meaghan Morter with a move on the final 50. The third podium position went to Mikaela Wong also of Medicine Hat's Alberta Marlin club.   Caleb Lee of Medicine Hat took the Alberta Marlin club to the top of the podium with a convincing performance finishing in 2:47.78.  Mackenzie Flowers of Edmonton and Kenton Williams of Calgary rounded out the podium positions.

The girls 11-12 year old age group saw Shayla Pogany win in a 2:47.47 ahead of Cascade teammate Taryn Pratt while Leah Wookey of the University of Calgary club finished in third.  Edmonton Olympian teammates earned the top two positions in the 13-14 year old group with Paige Kremer and Emily Flowers finishing 1-2 respectivly ahead of University of Calgary's Haley Jaques who took third.

University of Calgary's Jarod Tsang took home his second gold of the evening with his 2:26.34 performance in the 11-12 year old category.  Olympian teammates Aiden Friesen and Frederik Kamminga took the silver and bronze positions.  In the 13-14 year old age group  Bow River's Jonathan Brown won finishing with a final time of 2:13.62 and.  Okotoks Ryan Jackson and Cascade's Ken Stairs earned the second and third place positions.

50 Butterfly
Red Deer Catalina's Rebecca Smith flew to the gold medal in the 10 and under girls event finishing in 34.86 while Calgary's Haley Strange and Red Deer's Kristen Trepanier finished in second and third for the remaining medal positions.  Kenton Williams of the University of Calgary was the boys 10 and under winner over Okotoks Finlay Knox and Mackenzie Flowers of Edmonton.

Lili Margitai of the Edmonton Keyano club won her second gold of the evening taking the 11-12 girls over Calgary's Alyssa Gabris and teammate Rachel Maradyn with a finishing time of 30.31.  Chelsea Shaul of the University of Calgary was the winner when the waves settled in the 13-14 year old age group.  Less than two tenths seperated the top three finishers in the event with Chelsea finishing in 29.02 and closely followed by Edwina Chih of the Calgary Patriots and Leah Troskot of Lethbridge.

Jarod Tsang kept his golden streak alive by winning the 11-12 boys category with a 30.50 in the event.  Jarod was followed by Aiden Friesen of the Olympians and Ryder McGinnis of Keyano.  Anthony Lyons of Cascade won a very close race against the Stingrays Ryan Jackson finishing with final times of 28.30 and 28.45 respectivly while Rhys Johnson of the Bow River Swim Association finishing third.

100 Breaststroke
Karah Folk of the Edmonton Keyano club won the girls 10 and under event with a 1:29.71 followed closely by Mckenna Christensen of the Ponoka Pool Sharks and Allison McCloy of the University of Calgary.  Ishan Montenegro of the University of Calgary lead Michael McMahon and Justin Lisoway, both of Okotoks, to win a very close race in the 10 and under boys category.  With less than a second seperating the top three finishers Ishan finished with a 1:37.41.

The University of Calgary was represented again by Kara Vanderbeek in the 11-12 girls category who  won in 1:20.69 ahead of Cascade's Emily Wagner and Red Deer Catalina's Madalyn Smith.  In the 13-14 year old group it was Edmonton Keyano's Chelsea Chan finishing in 1:13.70 just ahead of Grande Prairie's Michelle Bylow.  Rounding out the top three was Christy Dashko of the Okotoks club.

Ryder McGinnis of the Edmonton Keyano team took the top position with 1:15.35 in the 11-12 age grouping over Patriots Lucas Graboski and University of Calgary's Mark Lai.  Ken Stairs of Cascade Swimming finished first amongst the 13-14 year olds finishing with a 1:09.40.  Josiah Butt of the University of Calgary and Dustin Warrack of Cascade finished up the final medal positions.

400 Freestyle
Rebecca Smith of the Red Deer Catalina's took the gold in the 10 and under girls category finishing with a very respectable 5:12.72. Silver was awarded to Karah Folk of the Keyano club and Red Deer's Kristen Trepanier took the bronze.  Alberta Marlin Caleb Lee was awarded the top podium position on the boys side for his 5:17.67 effort which beat out Joshua Freund of the LA swim club and Ishan Montenegro of the University of Calgary.

Shayla Pogany, of Calgary's Cascade Club won the 11-12 year old girls 400 freestyle with a very fast time of 4:33.43.  Keeping in mind Shayla is still 11 she is now within one second of a provincial record that dates back to 1981.  Finishing behind Shayla were the pair of Keyano swimmers Lili Margitai and Sophia Saroukian.  Hannah Lantz of the Edmonton Keyano Club won the 13-14 year old age grouping to win her second event of the weekend with a time of 4:30.44.  Paige Kremer of the Olympians and Jessica Warrack of Cascade finished in 2nd and 3rd.

The Edmonton Olympian club saw Noah Lubberding win the 11-12 boys side of the event with a 4:51.70 ahead of teammate Frederik Kamminga and Medicine Hat Waves Nathan Sawicki.  Cascade's Anthony Lyons added another gold to his collection finishing in 4:13.72 over teammate Dustin Warrack and Cameron Fowler of the Calgary Patriots.

200 Freestyle Relay
In the 10 and under girls category the University of Calgary club won the first relay of the evening with Kate Rendall, Sophie Lalonde-Bester, Taeya Jones and Haley Strange moving well ahead on the final 50 of the race.  The University of Calgary also took the boys side of the age group with Ishan Montenegro, Paul Latkovic, David Chiu and Kenton Williams.

The 11-12 girls saw Cascade's foursome of Shayla Pogany, Taryn Pratt, Laurin Thorne and Lauren Hedley win by moving ahead through the middle of the race finishing in 1:57.30.  On the boys side it was a very close race between the Olympians, Keyano and the University of Calgary club.  When the spashing and dashing was done Kyle Aseron, Noah Lubberding, Aiden Friesen and Frederik Kamminga from the Edmonton Olympian club were the final winners with a 1:58.02 with second and third less than a second behind.

The Edmonton Olympian team had a second relay finish with to honours with Paige Kremer, Emily Flowers, Abigail Lovsin and Arynn deLeeuw win the event with a final time of 1:51.83 followed closely by teams from Medicine Hat and Cascade.  The Cascade Swim Club won the final event of the evening taking the 13-14 boys category in the final 50 of the race.  Ken Stairs, Dustin Warrack and Connor Bayne and Anthony Lyons were the eventual medalists in the event.
